I still don’t understand how in a series with such f*cked up relationships a shipping fandom it’s even possible, and yes that includes Anthy/Utena

submitted by anonymous

probably something to do with how the entire show is about utena and anthy being in love with each other and growing and learning in their journey to become less fucked up people and they actually get there! enough they can reenter the world! the official art has them making out and reuniting after the show and THEY KISS AT THE END OF THE MOVIE jesus christlike on what planet do relationships have to be 100 percent healthy to be shipped? why is it more healthy for them to be intensely sexually charged and romantic acting friends? that’s still a relationship yaknow

Together We’ll Shine- Utena x Anthy fanmix

I made a short fanmix for my OTP to end all OTPs! You’ll probably recognize some of the songs from AMVs I made- I also got a couple watching other people’s AMVs.

8tracks

download

1. Jezebel- Iron & Wine- Who’s seen Jezebel? She was born to be the woman we could blame. Make me a beast half as brave I’d be the same.

Who’s seen Jezebel? Will the mountain last as long as I can wait? Wait like the dawn, how it aches to meet the day.

Who’s seen Jezebel? She was certainly the spark for all I’ve done. The window was wide, she could see the dogs come runnin’.

2. Cosmic Love- Florence + The Machine- I took the stars from my eyes and I made a map and knew somehow I could find my way back. Then I heard your heart beating, you were in darkness too. So I stayed in the darkness with you.

3.Drive- Melissa Ferrick-  I’ll hold you up and drive you all night I’ll hold you up and drive you ‘till you feel the daylight

4. If It Isn’t Her- Ani Difranco I have been playing too many of them boy-girl games She says honey you are safe here this is a girl-girl thing

I told him I loved him so he thought I’d roll over and play dead He was God’s gift to hypocrisy with weak knees and a big fat head She said don’t tell me that old story you are boring me tell me do you like me what are you gonna do now that you’re free

Standing like John Wayne she is full-frame she is center stage my imagination is rattling in it’s cage you know I didn’t really notice when everything else disappeared but as far as I’m concerned if it isn’t her it isn’t here

5. Antebellum- Vienna Teng- I know the borderlines we drew between us keep the weapons down keep the wounded safe I know our antebellum innocence was never meant to last to our armistice day

6. Vindicated- Dashboard Confessional- I am vindicated I am selfish I am wrong I am right I swear I’m right I swear knew it all along I am flawed but I am cleaning up so well I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

7. I’m Not Calling You a Liar- Florence + The Machine- I’m not calling you a liar just don’t lie to me I’m not calling you a thief just don’t steal from me I’m not calling you a ghost just stop haunting me and I love you so much I’m gonna let you kill me

8. Running Up That Hill- Placebo- If I only could make a deal with God get him to swap our places

9. Girl- Tori Amos- And in the mist she rides  Castles are burning in my heart and I twist I hold tight and I ride to work every morning wondering why

Sit in the chair and be good now Oh and become all that they’ve told you the white coats enter the room and I’m calling my baby callin by baby callin

She’s everybody else’s girl maybe one day she’ll be her own

10. Black Roses Red- Alana Grace- Honestly I’m standing here afraid I’ll be betrayed As twisted as it seems I only fear love when it’s in my dreams so let the morning light come in and let the darkness fade away

Can you turn my black roses red?

Touch- a short Anthy x Utena fic

To be honest I was disappointed with the fic I did for Anthy x Utena before- it was fluff, but by trying to have it make sense, it relied too much on contrived coincidence. So I did this one, which is much shorter and a little less happy-go-lucky. Warning, it does mention the past in-canon sexual assault both Utena and Anthy have experienced- not in detail, nor does it describe it, it just alludes to it and explores the possibility of them being triggered (in a vague sort of way). Mentions injuries and scarring. Also mentions sex more directly than my fics usually do (since I’m a hopless asexual virgin and all) but it doesn’t go into detail. I like this one much better than the other one right now.

Touch was a funny thing for both of them.

One time, Anthy grabbed Utena from behind, looping her arms around her and hugging her tightly. She let go quickly when she felt Utena flinch, shudder under her hands. Utena turned around and gave her a pained smile and say “Sorry. Really, it’s all right.” But it wasn’t all right. Anthy never approached her from behind again. The weight of the memory was too much.

Anthy wondered if Utena would ever feel comfortable turning her back on her.

And…

Utena x Anthy fic- Anything Else

Woo I did a short oneshot thing! It’s not as good as I’d like and turned out a little longer than expected too, but I tried. Vaguely based off official art.

Anthy had been in the outside world for a few months now, but crowds still scared her. The people milled around her, their faces blending into one another. Something brushed against her and she jolted, raising her hand to her face to block what she felt certain had to be an oncoming sword. But no, it was simply a man hurrying past her. Of course it was. Outside Ohtori Academy, nobody used swords anymore.

It was one of the many surprising changes the world had gone through while she’d been away. She felt like she had been running alongside everybody, but she’d tripped and they’d all left her behind. Now she was struggling to catch up.

She took the roses and threaded her way back to the cash register, forcing a smile. She’d gotten the job at the flower shop a little over a month ago. It had been like a miracle. She had no papers, no credentials, no work experience, almost no proof she even existed. She told people that she’d attended Ohtori Academy, but no one had ever heard of it.

“Why don’t you just go back there?” A potential employer had sneered in a fit of frustration after receiving her non committal answers. Anthy had lowered her eyes, clenched her hands together and made a quick exit, muttering “sorry to bother you.” Sometimes she wondered if she had changed at all.

But the man who ran the flower shop had looked her up and down and hired her right away. His gaze had been one all too familiar to her, the kind of gaze that crawled up you, the kind that wanted to crawl inside you. But a job was a job and she needed one if she wanted to survive long enough to find Utena.

She had no idea where to start with that. “Wait for me”- She’d spoken with such confidence, but really, what did she have to go on? The outside world was so much bigger than she remembered. She wondered if Utena felt as lost as she did. Probably not.

The Great Feminist Manga and Anime List: Revolutionary Girl Utena and Adolescence of Utena

adventuresofcomicbookgirl:

This review is of Revolutionary Girl Utena or Shoujo Kakumei Utena and the movie Adolescence of Utena (which is essentially a loose retelling/reinterpretation of the show). I am not reviewing the Utena manga by Chiho Saito, as I have never read them (well, I tried, but couldn’t make it). By all accounts, the quality is lower and the themes and queerness are erased or watered down. Saito’s homophobic comments don’t impress me either.

These are difficult works to review because revealing the true greatness of the series would require basically spoiling the whole plot. Even discussing specific characters or facets, I can’t do them justice without spoiling everything, but I’ll do my best.

The reason Utena has this challenge is because it’s a series that messes with your preconceptions and subverts your expectations. Nothing is as it seems and every character has layers and issues and complexes that will be peeled back as it goes on. Expect heavy symbolism and heavy concepts.

But what I can say about this series is that it is eminently qualified for being part of this review because the entire premise is deconstructing gender roles, examining and criticizing misogyny and turning ism-filled tropes so common in fiction on their head. Also tons of queer characters and themes and commentary on racism as well. This is not just a deconstruction of shoujo- it’s a deconstruction of myth and fairy tale and human psychology in general, and it’s not just a surface look either. It will make you uncomfortable. And it will revel in doing so. I should also note it’s pretty much the only thing I’ve ever seen that sexualizes men just as much as women are generally sexualized. All in the name of deconstruction, of course.

The Great Feminist Manga and Anime List: Revolutionary Girl Utena and Adolescence of Utena

These reviews are to examine the feminist-friendly elements of each series as well as the problematic elements.

In other words, this is simply meant to be a guide to recommend anime feminists like me might enjoy and also give warning of any elements that might disturb or affect someone. I am also aware I am limited by my white, Western feminist context in these reviews and thus, can’t really give anything other than the perspective of a Western feminist fan on various themes. I can only say what these series mean to me and what I take away from them as an outsider who is not the primary audience. If I get something wrong or if you are aware something has an entirely different connotation in Japanese culture that I am not privy to, I would love to hear about it so please feel free to tell me about it.
