Things have gotten SO HARDCORE we don’t even NEED an opening theme.
HAHAHAHA THANKS FOR THE EVERYONE’S DEAD OPENING SHOW BY THANKS I MEAN SCREW YOU
Aaaand Father has successfully pulled “God” down to Earth. Let’s appreciate that this series started out with two young boys using a transmutation circle to “take the place of God” in trying to reverse death, and now the final plot is a creature using a circle to LITERALLY take God’s place. Ed said he was Icarus who flew too close to the sun when he did this. Will Father fly too close to the sun too?
Well, absorbing God has at least given him a sexy makeover. That’s the most important thing.
HOHENHEIM’S PLAN THOUGH! Can we appreciate how perfectly planned out the plot of this series is? How tight and thematic it’s been this whole time? IT WAS AROUND 30 EPISODES AGO THAT WE SAW HOHENHEIM PULLING SOULS OUT OF HIS CHEST AND DUMPING THEM IN THE GROUND! Probably a lot of people forgot about it! But now it comes back and makes perfect sense.
What also makes sense is what Hohenheim was doing all these years he was gone- he was traveling the entire country to plant his seeds of counterattack.
I talked before about how Hohenheim talking to the individual lives inside them and them becoming his allies really shows how this story really values individual lives rather than lumping them into a statistic, and really values the individual agency people have, and that culminates right here. These people who Father saw as nothing more than tools and energy- because Hoho cared about them as individual lives and worked with them rather than just dismissing their unique lives and individuality- they strike back to become what ultimately undoes this creature’s plan. How heartbreaking that one of the souls that chose to sacrifice herself to save Amestris is likely a little girl? Ugh.
The manga gave a bit of a clearer explanation of what’s happening:
Makes sense to me in the context of the universe of the story. So nobody really died, their souls were just AWOL for a bit, but still attached, and were called back thanks to REALLY quick intervention.
And everyone comes back to us. INCLUDING WINRYYYYY. *clutches her protectively to my bosom* NEVER LEAVE ME AGAIN BB.
BUT FATHER’S ON THE ATTACK! Fortunately May Chang is here to save the day.
If you don’t love and respect May, I don’t know what to do with you. Look at this badass. She’s been badly injured by the main villain, and she’s STILL protecting everyone.
PS by the way, someone mentioned in the manga that Izumi seems kinda late contributing to the fight last episode and all- if you read the manga, you can clearly see that’s because she’s too busy babysitting/protecting Roy the whole time. Like she had to constantly toss him out of the way of stuff. KIND OF TO A HILARIOUS EXTENT.
sorry about ur life roy
The confrontation between Bradley and Scar.
This is so important on so many levels.
“Thank you kindly!”
Shippin’ fuel for KP, Greed implies Lan Fan and Ling are a thing, Ling doesn’t deny it and actually thanks him.
Roy has a badass foster superspy foster Mom. NOT SURPRISING Badasses come from badass mamas.
Pride, you little stinker. Pride is the FIRST little shit.
I love that Ed’s issues with being called “short” apparently have nothing to do with his actual height. He’s not tiny anymore, yet he STILL nurses that Napolean complex and gets upset when people mock him about. It’s a mental thing- he FEELS small and that makes him insecure, the actual physical reality doesn’t make a lick of difference.
Even Roy doesn’t seem to completely trust Grumman. But he and his team are gonna make their move, regardless.
More clever plans from Ed and Al is successfully rescued! He’s really on a roll today.
Unfortunately, Lan Fan’s automail also seems to be giving her trouble, but she’s determined to power through it like the badass she is.
Aaaand Pride eats Gluttony. Wow. Yeah. Talk about your ironic deaths. And Gluttony’s last words are calling out to Lust, which is kind of heartbreaking. He really did like her a lot and depend on her like an older sister. You can’t help but feel sorry for Gluttony- he wasn’t actively malevolent, just a childish creature who did as he was told and followed his base instincts. Goodbye, basketball –shaped prince.
Roy and Riza kidnap Mrs. Bradley VERY POLITELY. What are they up to? As Father said, talking Mrs. B hostage is kind of a terrible plan, and they should know that. Hmmmm…
(since this review is 90 percent gifs, I’ll mention they’re all from tumblr user riboku)
WINRY FEELINGS THIS EPISODE!!! Aw yeah my baby’s back and she’s not takin’ anyone’s shit.

I actually think Kimblee is telling the truth when he says he admires the Rockbells from the bottom of his heart, though he’s obviously framing this truth in the best way to manipulate Winry. It’s pretty clear from his later speech he admires people who stick to their ideals. Let’s be fair here who the hell ISN’T Riza
And with that, we are treated to the hilarious aftermath of what I assume is Ed’s first boner. I THINK HE JUST REALIZED WINRY HAS SEEN HIM IN HIS UNDERWEAR LIKE…ALL THE TIME. A bit slow on the uptake there, bud. I LOVE THAT ED IS SUCH A NERD THAT HE RECITES THE PERIODIC TABLE TO CALM HIS RAGING HORMONES. You are too much, son.
“Why did I fall in love with such a weirdo?” I have no idea, Winry, but it’s okay, y’all are adorable.
AHHHH WINRY LOVES AUTOMAIL SO MUCH. SHE JUST WANTS TO TURN YOU INTO A WALKING SWISS ARMY KNIFE ED, LET HER LIVE HER DREAM. It’s weird to agree with Kimblee but it IS great how spirited and dedicated she is about her career. Idk, Kimblee may be the worst, but dude’s got good judgement in joining the Winry Rockbell fanclub
(and in case there’s any doubt he’s a fan, in the manga he actually ends his statement about her being dedicated with “I love women like her”, which causes Ed to make the most hilarious freaked out face of all time and back away from Kimblee, at which point Kimblee gets super offended and is like “NOT LIKE THAT GOD I’M NOT A PEDOPHILE HOW DARE YOU”. Yeah, you heard it. Kimblee, genocidal psychopath, is offended at anyone thinking he would ever lust after a teenage girl. STANDARDS.)
Olivier tells her men to put the blame on her if Raven’s death against shows she has a strong sense of morality and responsibility. She takes her position of command seriously and would never let those under her suffer for her actions, which is where she differs from men like Raven. I don’t really get how one can argue she’s not compassionate and moral in her own way.
Even though Olivier doesn’t like Roy, she’s still a good judge of people and judges him well.
ROY YOU FUCKING DORK. NOBODY SAID YOU HAD TO BUY ALL THOSE FLOWERS. SO MUCH FOR THE SUAVE SMOOTHNESS OF ROY MUSTANG.
AND NOW THE REVEAL WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR. THE FINAL AND FIRST HOMUNCULUS IS UNMASKED. OH SELIM BRADLEY, THOSE HEARTSTRINGS OF OURS YOU TUGGED- WE WERE YOUR PUPPETS ALL ALONG.
The creepy child trope can be pretty overused, but I’d say FMA pulls it off, since for so riduculously long Selim was an innocent in the eyes of a viewer, it is genuinely unsettling to learn he’s anything but. But a couple hints were laid- Selim saying he wanted to “help his father” and Bradley saying Selim couldn’t be used against him, the fact it was Bradley Pride had his conversation with. Moreover, we’re also looking for a possible explanation why Pride didn’t report Bradley to Father for his potential treasonous talk- maybe he has some affection for his fake dad after all?
Huge props to Riza for being a bamf as usual. She figures out the situation immediately, and as Pride notes, handles the situation in the best way she possibly could. She knows she’s outmatched, but she stays calm even while being threatened, calls Selim’s bluffs and even gets as much information out of him as she can. Straight up horror movie shit here, and she barely flinches.
Now not only could Envy be anywhere, but Pride could be listening AT ANY TIME (provided there’s shadows, apparently). DOUBLE THE FUN.
So you guys seriously thought your best plan was to try to force the sixteen year old boy go on a killing spree like…all that would take for that plan to be foiled would be Olivier coming out to glare at Ed. Ed dissolves into a insensate puddle of tears, plot foiled.
Yep, Kimblee’s casual “oh okay that’s respectable as long as you actually stick to it” when Ed says he’s resolved not to kill indicates he absolutely has respect for all people who are committed to what they do, even if their principles differ from his. So while he wouldn’t hestitate to kill Ed or Winry, he respects them as long as they keep showing that dedication and commitment. He makes it clear he’s perfectly aware that his personal morals and way of thinking runs counter to the “normal” way, but they’re his nonetheless. So he understands that what’s “normal” depends on point of view- Ed’s principles may seem “abnormal” to him, but that doesn’t mean they’re not valid. For him, it will be whatever way of life wins out that will decide what is truly “right” and “normal.” In his own weird way, Kimblee also adheres to “survival of the fittest”, though he combines it with moral relativism. It’s surprisingly complex for such a thoroughly “bad” guy.
I REALLY LOVE THE BIT WHERE ED SAYS HE REFUSES TO BETRAY WINRY BY LYING TO HER AND THAT SINCE SHE’S INVOLVED, SHE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON. This is how you do positive character development, people. Ed has genuinely LEARNED AND GROWN from the thing with Scar AND ISN’T MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN
