Okay, I wish I would NEVER have to make a post like this.. but here it is.

That’s Emily, a girl I’ve known for about 10 years. That’s her face a couple of days after her boyfriend beat the shit out of her. She has to get facial surgery for broken bones, a titanium plate inserted for her “pulverized cheekbones”.

She has been amazingly open about her experience and very optimistic, retaining her sense of humour, but her ex-boyfriend hasn’t been caught yet. He beat her in Arizona but he might be out of the state by now.

His name is Chris Young. He’s a raver and a DJ. I’m not friends with him on facebook, so I can’t get any better pictures than that. But you can see that she trusted him. And he broke that trust in trying to break her.

If you see him, please call the Tucson Police. IF you know ANYTHING about him, call the police.

(Laila’s eyes are empty and horrified.)

Shimei: Your life rests in the hands of-

Laila: …will never…

Shimei: Hm?

Laila: I’LL NEVER (she grabs her knife) FORGIVE YOU! (she lunges)

Shimei (suddenly behind her): So what? (grabs her ponytail) Shut up and just hand over your body.

I really love that these flashbacks show so clearly that Shimei was never Taito’s villian, but Laila’s. Laila is the one Shimei has hurt the most, who has taken so many things from her. Shimei nearly killed her the very first time he showed up. Shimei killed her friend. Shimei killed her father in front of her and rubbed all her loss in her face. Shimei manipulated her (possibly with sorcery) into attacking her brother as a result, and it was her strength that let her shake that off. Shimei tried to kill her again, and then killed Housei right in front of her. Taito wasn’t there for his father’s death, that was entirely Laila’s story (and the anime fucked that up. We’ll see if they fuck this up too).

Shimei has victimized Laila and Laila’s friends so many times, and she hasn’t been able to do anything about it. So of course she must be the one to face Shimei, to have this final battle, to avenge what she’s lost. Most narratives wouldn’t think of it this way because women exist to be victimized by the villian, why should their pain matter, why should they have an arc and closure there? In most narratives, the fact Shimei actually hurt Laila a lot more than Taito wouldn’t ever be noticed. But this is Hiromu Arakawa, and she gives her ladies the due they deserve.

I also think it’s really important that Laila is fighting this battle to protect someone, though, not to avenge anything. She has a little boy who’s dependent on her and she knows if Shimei takes her body, it will be used to kill her brother and other friends. It was mentioned earlier in the manga that Taito can only fight to his full potential when protecting someone, and it’s the same for Laila. The reason she couldn’t take on Shimei before, that she’s coming into her own now, is because she needed someone the protect to truly fight to her full potential.

Fighting despite her huge wound, Laila staggers

Shimei (going to cut her legs from under her): Oh my, you seem to have trouble staying on your fee-

(Laila does a massive jump, causing Shimei to swing and miss)

-Tch?

(Shimei just barely blocks Laila’s sword) …Whoa. (jumping back) I’m impressed you can still move that much.

(Laila dodges another blow. Her blood drips on the ground, she has her back against the wall, clutching her side)

Never tell Laila she must be having trouble staying on her feet, you’ll look really dumb. Because this fabulous lady can kick all the ass with plus one agility even with a gaping stomach wound. Even Shimei has to give props.

(Laila clutches her side, she’s bleeding heavily)

Shimei:Now I get it. No wonder you were able to control Hagun.I had no idea you were a descendant of a shaman who controlled the stars!

Laila: ?

Shimei (licking lips): How interesting… (the eye of Shimei’s sword opens to begin the spell, Laila’s eyes widen) I WILL TAKE YOUR BODY!

Laila (closing her eyes with great effort) Don’t look him in the eye!

So you thought it was just Taito that had a speshul destiny as a badass and his sister was just some girl? TURNS OUT LAILA IS THE BIGGEST BADASS OUT OF ALL OF THEM. The one who controls all the other badasses. YEAH.
