Captain America: The Winter Soldier spoilers in the fic
Winry looked at the ocean rolled out endlessly before her. She closed her eyes. She almost wished she was still out there, submerged in the ice. She wished both she and Ed could have just stayed asleep rather than woken up in a new world where they were enemies.
She remembered the day she had faced her parents killer and found herself unable to shoot. She’d been shaking, sobbing. Ed had been there for her then. He had gently held her hands. “Your hands weren’t meant to kill. They were meant to save lives”.
Now that same man was poised to kill twenty thousand people.
She heard footsteps approaching and opened her eyes. It was Paninya. She already had her suit on, ready to fly.
"Are you ready?" she asked Winry, concern in her eyes.
Winry shook her head. “I’m not sure I can fight him. A long time ago, he was…he once told me my hands were meant to save lives. Maybe I can…
Paninya hesitated, opening her mouth and closing it again. Then she sighed, walked up to Winry’s side and looked out at the ocean with her. ”I didn’t know him before,” she said, not looking at Winry. “But whoever he is now, I don’t think he’s the kind of guy who save. He’s the kind you stop.”
Even knowing what she had to do, it was still hard to look into his eyes.
"Ed," she said. "Please remember."
She searched for a glimmer of recognition, anything. But nothing. His eyes that had once burned with life were cold and empty now.
"People are going to die. I can’t let that happen. Not even if it’s you."
His expression didn’t change. He simply clapped his hands together, turning his automail into a blade.
She sighed and readied her shield. “C’mon, Ed. How many times have I told you not to use my automail like that?”
He lunged at her. She ran at him too, ready to bring the sheild down on his shoulder joint. Time to take it apart and start from scratch.
