So, looking through the manga artbooks for my thesis, I found these notes by Naoko on Haruka and Michiru. I know there’s been discussion on how Haruka’s “look” varies wildly in the manga, so this should prove interesting:

When I decided on the content of the third series, and started writing down character creation, I drew this as an example of the feeling I wanted their civilian-clothed forms to have. It’s a doodle I never intended to publish anywhere. Their faces and hairstyles are still like they’re actually different people. Michiru-sama is such an adult. I just wanted to draw the clothes of these two.”

“I can’t think of these two as the same people at all as the two on the previous page. Especially since Haruka-sama is in male form. In the anime as well, I wanted to do a lot with Haruka-sama in male form. I was surprised to notice a number of people dressed in Infinity School uniforms at events. There were also girls in green wigs. Wow! Not just after transforming, I guess. But I love watching costume play, so I was happy.”

I can’t really tell if she’s saying they look different on purpose or if she’s saying she’s embarrassed by it, but it’s interesting she’s definitely aware of it either way.

A presentation for my WGSS class. For some reason the text got all messed up. Ah well, it’s still readable

basically and overview of “HEY THESE AWESOME LESBIANS! the dub censored them. AREN’T DUB SCENES HILARIOUS. SCORNING WOMEN IS POSITIVELY FEUDALISTIC. The dub…censored that too? RUN MISOGYNISTS OVER WITH A PLANE”

i think that gives you an overview of the depth and nuance yes.

Sailor Moon Hogwarts Houses

Rebloggable by request!

Usagi: Hufflepuff.  helping people, nurturing. She’s not the charge into battle type but it’s her loyalty to her friends that spurs her on.

Mamoru: He of the chivalry and martyrdom and ridic speeches, yeah gryff.

Chibiusa: She IS the charge into battle hotheaded type, so Gryffindor too.

Ami: Ravenclaw. Sailor Senshi of Wisdom come on.

Rei: Gryffindor. SAILOR SENSHI OF WAR AND PASSION!!!

Makoto: Gryffindor. Sailor Senshi of Courage and Protection IT’S ALL IN THEIR NAMES.

Minako: Slytherin. Girl is ambitious to the point where she can disregard others on occasion. She’s loyal to a fault, but she’ll eliminate people who threaten her people without hesitation. And she loves being top dog.

Michiru: Ravenclaw. She’s driven in academic stuff and swimming and dislikes being condescended to on those fronts, but she doesn’t need to win.

Haruka: Gryffindor actually? She’s stubborn, conceited, into martyring herself, hotheaded as much as she tries to deny it, and she started out v. idealistic.

Hotaru: I see her as a Hufflepuff? She’s so loyal and dedicated to those she cares about, even if she isn’t the charge into battle type herself. And she wants to be a nurse- healings a v. Hufflepuff occupation.

Setsuna: I see her as another Hufflepuff, she’s all about duty and loyalty but she loves being around people, especially children. I mean, she DID become a nurse.

shiracirca asked: Since you're doing so much research on Sailor Moon~ What do you think of the opinion that Anime Haruka x Michiru is better than (and also less problematic than) Manga Haruka x Michiru?

I think it’s a valid opinion? I agree that their relationship is a lot more developed in the anime than the manga. I’m less…mad at the manga about it than some of my friends i guess bc the manga really was 100% focused on Usagi and everyone else was kinda developed in relation to her, which is why I feel the whole Usagi/Haruka drama was given more attention than Haruka/Michiru.

Still, Naoko definitely could have done a lot more with them even with that stipulation-she could have shown more of them together, shown them resolving the troubles they were implied to have in S and reaffirm their relationship, had them kiss, etc. She dropped the ball there. So yeah, anime Haruka/Michiru is better than manga and less problematic bc it’s well, THERE more and their dynamic is more developed. I would agree with that statement pretty 100 percent.

And I do plan to mention that in my thesis when I go over the queer content in the anime and manga of Sailor Moon, so look forward to seeing a more thorough analysis there i guess :P
