I could stare at these  enjoying all the little details all day. And I’m not even in the same universe as an artist.

Artists out there? If you have any expert commentary about these eyes and how it all works from a character perspective, I would dearly love to hear it.

I’m not really much of an artist, but i have listened to a lot of talk about eyes in anime or in animation in general.

Narrower eyes generally denote maturity/streetwiseness/being older in animation while huge eyes denote innocence, so it makes sense the outers eyes are the least wide and round with Setsuna’s being the narrowest. Michiru’s are the softest out of the three, fitting her ladylike outward persona, but her gaze is just as feirce as Setsuna. Hauka’s angry eyebrows are the most severe out of the three, which goes with, you know, how she is.

Going to Rei- she has Tsurime eyes- this “outer corners slant upwards, ending in a distinct sharp point” symbolizes “strong will, arrogance, or pride in a character”. Rei. Nuff said.

Ami, on the other hand, has more Tareme eyes- “They droop or sag at the corners” and “enerally represents a kind, quiet, sad, fragile or otherwise “soft” person”. Ami’s quiet and kind nature is there, but her determination is evident.

Minako’s eyes are very round and huge, pretty similar to Usagi’s if I recall. lack the softness of Ami’s or harshness of Rei’s.

Mako’s eyes are the smallest of this group, which again, could denote her maturity and street smarts. She lives on her own, after all. She’s the one with the most street smarts. I also like that her eyebrows are bit thicker.

You know, it really irks me when people go

“THE SAILOR MOON ANIME WHITEWASHED PLUTO! SHE’S NOT THE DARK SKINNED WOMAN THAT THE MANGA PORTRAYS HER AS!”

… … Uh, you mean…

This manga?

image

With this Sailor Pluto?

image

yeah, just look at that bronze complexion

image

gorgeous woman…

It depends on the pic honestly

But yeah, she is guilty of whitewashing in quite a few, and though she’s usually darker than the other Senshi, pluto is never quite as dark as she looks in the manga b and w. TBH Naoko was hella inconsistent with her coloring to begin with, often switching up haircolor or whatever color- an unfortunately, this applied to Setsuna’s skin tone in the pics, and I don’t think Naoko considered the unfortunate implications there. Sailorfailures made an interesting post on it a while back.

However, the manga b and w makes it clear she’s meant to be dark, so I hope the new anime follows that rather than the paler pics.

Sailor Moon Hogwarts Houses

Rebloggable by request!

Usagi: Hufflepuff.  helping people, nurturing. She’s not the charge into battle type but it’s her loyalty to her friends that spurs her on.

Mamoru: He of the chivalry and martyrdom and ridic speeches, yeah gryff.

Chibiusa: She IS the charge into battle hotheaded type, so Gryffindor too.

Ami: Ravenclaw. Sailor Senshi of Wisdom come on.

Rei: Gryffindor. SAILOR SENSHI OF WAR AND PASSION!!!

Makoto: Gryffindor. Sailor Senshi of Courage and Protection IT’S ALL IN THEIR NAMES.

Minako: Slytherin. Girl is ambitious to the point where she can disregard others on occasion. She’s loyal to a fault, but she’ll eliminate people who threaten her people without hesitation. And she loves being top dog.

Michiru: Ravenclaw. She’s driven in academic stuff and swimming and dislikes being condescended to on those fronts, but she doesn’t need to win.

Haruka: Gryffindor actually? She’s stubborn, conceited, into martyring herself, hotheaded as much as she tries to deny it, and she started out v. idealistic.

Hotaru: I see her as a Hufflepuff? She’s so loyal and dedicated to those she cares about, even if she isn’t the charge into battle type herself. And she wants to be a nurse- healings a v. Hufflepuff occupation.

Setsuna: I see her as another Hufflepuff, she’s all about duty and loyalty but she loves being around people, especially children. I mean, she DID become a nurse.
