Maggie Goes on A Diet by Paul Kramer, is due for publication in the US in October but is already listed on many bookseller’s websites. The book tells the story of 14-year-old Maggie who “is transformed from being extremely overweight and insecure to a normal-sized girl who becomes the school football star”. “Through time, exercise and hard work, Maggie becomes more and more confident and develops a positive self-image,” it adds.

Really? Really?

Okay, so, fuck. This book cover and description is triggering. 

Maggie goes on a diet to develop a positive self image? Only when she is “normal sized” (WTF IS NORMAL SIZED? WTF, BOOK!) does she think positively about herself? Do you understand what the fuck you’re writing, Paul M. Kramer? Cashing in on a culture that sells young girls their insecurities? Well done, you disgusting shithead.

this is reeeeeeeeally gross. Weight loss should not be sold to young girls something that magicallpositive self image or transforms their lives. I….this is a culture that still has eating disorders, how could someone even begin to write something like this? A girl’s life should not be defined by her weight.Excercise is good, but it’s not a magic cure for all your problems.  So screwed up. HOW ABOUT TEACHING GIRLS TO LOVE THEMSELVES HOWEVER THEY ARE INSTEAD, FUCKHEAD? YOU KNOW, POSITIVE MESSAGES? THE THING OUR CULTURE IS LACKING.

Guys, my Dad is ridiculously fatphobic so it’s an insecurity that was passed down to me and I struggle with it a lot. I hate what I percieve to be my own chubbiness and I know it’s wrong but it’s so deeply ingrained in me I can’t stop. So shit like this really upsets me.
