okay so this is why I could never function in anime fandom communities or most online communities
I read a couple other posts in that thread that a nice person quoted me in and sent a message about and ARGH I just have to comment on some of the things said.
In an otherwise good and accurate post defending Sailor Moon, a person said
all throughout Sailor Moon the girls never lose what make them women (unlike the example brought up with Claymore where everyone is pretty much a brainwashed, emotionless husk of a soldier who I suspect have had their uterus’ removed)
Um what.
WHAT.
Yes, the Claymore’s are brainwashed and molded and controlled by the organization.
Good thing the PLOT OF THE MANGA is a group of Claymore’s breaking free and revolting against the Organization. And it’s very easy to read that as a feminist allegory- the Org is mostly men, creating and brainwashing female soldiers and killing them if they get too independent, but the women are breaking free and discovering the true corruption and are determined to destroy that system.
And emotionless husk? Did you…read any of the title at all? None of them are emotionless husks. The Organization sees them that way, and it’s sort of scary that’s the point of view you share. But the Claymore’s are all driven by tragedy and trauma, they get scared, they form bonds and connections, they cry and scream and laugh, and have moral convictions and independent thought. They are stoic and tough, but very much emotional. Hell, quite a few of them (Clare, Teresa, Miria, Clarise, even Galatea with those kids she liked at the church) are NURTURERS at heart, taking in lost kids/comrades and taking care of them, acting like parents. The women are stoic and tough and prickly on the outside and stab things with swords, all traditionally “masculine” but they have feelings and relationships and emotions and all that “feminine” shit. and if you see gender as that binary, I feel sorry for you.
And “I suspect they have their uterus’s removed”. Well, there’s no proof of that I wouldn’t put it past the Organization, but are you trying to imply that not having a uterus makes someone less of a “real woman”? That it damages your womanhood, you can’t be a woman without a uterus? If so, then FUCK. YOU. There are many “real women” out there who do not have a uterus, all a uterus is is something that lets you get pregnant, and the ability to get pregnant does not fucking define a woman.
