People liked my lil “female frienship in Sailor Moon” rant but I forgot to link to the comment that inspired it!
Oops! Here it is:
You know, it’s really hitting me now how awesome and rare this whole girl-crush thing is. Not even just as a queer thing (though yay for Uranus and Neptune and I swear Rei and Venus totally have a thing at the end of the manga), but… in Western comics and culture, it is somehow totally expected and accepted that women are supposed to hate each other. ESPECIALLY we are supposed to hate gorgeous talented women. That’s presented as normal.
I got a craving to re-read my Blue Beetle comics recently, and I do love them, but, Brenda has this thing, like when the Teen Titans are introduced, the boys are drooling, and she’s grumbling about gorgeous perfect-skinned women from Jessica Albachusetts. And it’s a hilarious line, but…. Usagi would totally be getting all sparkly-eyed and going “Wow! They ARE gorgeous! So cool! *sparkleheartstars*” and then she’d probably become best friends with all of them and they’d go get ice cream or something, and THAT is presented as a normal response to meeting awesome ladies.
I like that. We need more of that.
Isn’t that a great comment? I love s_d! (most of the time)
Now I am probably going to spam a bunch of LA Sailor Moon screencaps, because that was the most sismantic freindship-y episode yet.
