Someone just made a reallly good comment on my Sailor Moon post
About how awesome it is that whenever she sees a hot talented girl Usagi instantly falls in love with her rather than sniping or backbiting or any of those typical “females always hate each other” things. This post really drove it in to me how ingrained that stereotype is, especially in America. (Catwoman would NEVER slutshame anyone)
But in Sailor Moon…Usagi is surrounded by girls that are (supposedly) hotter and more successful than she is. And her response to that is to LOOK UP TO THEM and try to emulate them. She loves them all unreservedly and sees them as wonderful people she wants to be like. The other senshi have this attitude too. Look at how they all adore Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna. Look at how Usagi always compliments Rei on getting boys, working hard, Ami of being smart, thinks that Venus is the best because she’s Sailor V, adores Jupiter’s cooking.
They NEVER let a boy ruin their relationship either. In the anime, both Mako and Usagi crushed hard on Motoki. Did they get competitive and start hating each other over it? Nope, they made a pact they’d both try their best, whoever got him first wins, but they’d remain friends no matter what. Remember how Rei was dating Mamoru only then he and Usagi fall in love? Was Rei bitter, did she hate Usagi? No. She was initially upset she was being a coward when a guy she liked sacrificed himself for her…but that lasted TWO SECONDS the very next she’s protecting Usagi and telling her she knows she can do it. Then the VERY NEXT EPISODE Rei basically tells Usagi “You can have him, you guys clearly have a true love thing and my thing with him is one sided. What I have with you is more important to me, and I want you to be happy.” And Usagi never ONCE gets on Rei for having formerly dated Mamoru (well, once jokingly I think…the ninja episode?) she absolutely trusts her to be around him and never gets bitter or hateful about it. And Ami teasingly hits on Mamoru once and Usagi responds by chasing around Ami childishly and teasingly, not with DEEP BITTERNESS AND HATRED OMG. Setsuna has a crush on Mamoru too (at least in the manga) but that never affects her loyalty to Usagi for a second. These girls know their friendships are too important to be broken up by any sort of jealousy or a guy.
Sailor Moon is about women loving and supporting each other. They love each other for their beauty and accomplishments. And their sisterhood is unbreakable.
