Comic Book Experience on the bus from college
I have no car. Therefore I take the shuttle to college every day. I do not like it because it is noisy and shakes a lot. Sometimes it is full and I have to stand.
There is also this really terrible bus driver. If it’s full, she insists you don’t stand (despite there being a pole specifically for the purpose of standing passengers) but SQUISH ON THE SEATS leading to one terrible experince where I spent the entire trip holding desperately onto the seat infront of me, teetering on the very edge while the girl beside me huffed, trying not to fall into the aisle my arm aching.
Also, you have to throw away ANY FOOD OR DRINK before getting into the bus, something no one else makes you do. So I just had to throw away my ice cream before getting on which is okay because I shouldn’t have been eating it I need to lose weight. *is a victim of the patriarchy* But she also made a girl empty out the INCH OF WATER left in her WATER BOTTLE. Wat. According to my room mate, she occasionally stops to yell at people as well, and once wouldn’t pick up people standing IN THE SNOW ON THE LAST SHUTTLE RIDE.
There’s no point to any of that, I’m just ranting. The real point is while riding back to my apartment with that hellspawn, she turned on the radio and some dude was talking about how he was embarrassed about reading this really good comic because it had such girly covers and was so clearly aimed for teenage girls.
I perked up, wondering if he was talking about shoujo manga or a SM Loves MJ. Someone was talking about comics on the radio!
No, he was talking about Runaways.
What?
Dude, Runaways is not aimed towards teenage girls. It just happens to be more teenage-girl friendly than most of Marvel, which is SO NOT A HARD THING TO DO. It’s more aimed at teenagers, period. And the covers are girly? *tries to remember Runaways covers* There was one where Gert hugged her dinosaur! Maybe that’s girly because it involves hugging! Maybe the one where Molly SMASHED THE TRUCK to let the cute little ducks cross. I mean, the later crappier stuff has the Humberto Ramos Manga look, and manga is eternally girly or something, but he was talking about the good stuff since he mentioned he had a crush on Karolina and OMG WAIT SHE’S A LESBIAN.
But apparently, this dude (Dave Foster) was SO SUPER EMBARRASSED to be reading SUCH A GIRLY COMIC (which involves superheroes explosions dinosaurs and decapitation) and surely people were staring at him all the time. Dude, I doubt ANYone cares, especially in New York. You are just incredibly insecure in your masculinity. I can shudder to think what would happen if you had to read Sailor Moon in public or something. News flash: No one would care then either.
So I actually said due to surprise: “Runaways is not girly. What the hell is he talking about?” A girl turned and stared at me. The bus driver from hell was unaffected.
The radio guy obviously thought Runaways was good. That’s great! He just needs to stop ghettoizing comics like they’re this stupid embarrassing thing to read even WHEN THEY’RE GOOD. And especially not assume that comic with actual girls in it= girly and girly= embarrassing and awful.
